## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL. A FACTOR WAS THE UNFORECASTED STRONG CROSS WINDS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - weather condition - unfavorable wind (contributing factor)
  - aircraft control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

DURING A DAYLIGHT APPROACH THE PILOT EXPERIENCED STRONGER THAN FORECASTED CROSSWINDS. DURING THE LANDING ROLL THE PILOT LOST CONTROL AND VEERED ABRUPTLY LEFT CAUSING THE LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR TO COLLAPSE AND RESULTING IN SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRPLANE. WINDS WERE FROM 310 DEGREES AT 8 KNOTS GUSTING TO 14 KNOTS. TOWER PERSONNEL WERE PREPARING TO SHIFT FROM RUNWAY 17 TO RUNWAY 35 WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED.

## Other investigations on N3167G (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA17CA149](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA17CA149), Apr 8, 2017: North American T 6G (N3167G), Culpepper, VA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain airplane and directional control during the landing roll and subsequent go-around in gusting wind conditions.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
