## Probable cause

SEIZURE OF THE #2 PISTON WHICH RESULTED IN THE LOST OF ENGINE POWER AND SUBSEQUENT COLLISION WITH TREES DURING A FORCED LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - mech failure/malf, climb - to cruise
  - engine assembly,piston - seized (cause)
- Forced landing, landing
- In flight collision with object, landing
  - object - tree(s)

## Analysis

THE PILOT REPORTED THAT HE WAS ON CLIMBOUT WHEN THE ENGINE LOST POWER. ACCORDING TO THE PILOT, THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING GOOD, AND THEN IT LOST POWER WITHOUT WARNING. THE PILOT MADE A FORCED LANDING TO AN OPEN FIELD, BUT LANDED SHORT AND STRUCK TREES. EXAMINATION OF THE ENGINE REVEALED THAT THE #2 CYLINDER PISTON HAD SEIZED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920619020219A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920619020219A), Jun 19, 1992: Erie, PA, Substantial damage. Lost power on climbout. Struck trees trying land in a field. Engine had seized.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
