## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S IMPROPER USE OF CARBURETOR HEAT, WHICH RESULTED IN THE FORMATION OF CARBURETOR ICE AND A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER AND SUBSEQUENT FORCED LANDING IN TREES.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(partial) - nonmechanical, missed approach (ifr)
  - weather condition - carburetor icing conditions (cause)
  - carburetor heat - improper use of, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with object, descent - emergency
  - object - tree(s)

## Analysis

THE PILOT ATTEMPTED AN APPROACH, BUT HE WAS UNABLE TO SEE THE RUNWAY AND EXECUTED A MISSED APPROACH. WHILE ON A DOWNWIND AND PREPARING FOR ANOTHER APPROACH, THE AIRPLANE CRASHED IN TREES. A WITNESS HEARD THE ENGINE 'SPUTTER' BEFORE IMPACT. EXAMINATION OF THE AIRPLANE AND A TEARDOWN OF THE ENGINE FOUND NO DISCREPANCIES. THE WEATHER WAS: CEILING 400 FEET BROKEN VISIBILITY 3/4 OF A MILE, TEMPERATURE 43F, DEWPOINT 42F. IN THE FAA CHART FOR CARBURETOR ICE, THIS TEMPERATURE/DEWPOINT COMBINATION FAVORS THE FORMATION OF CARBURETOR ICING.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19911222057139A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19911222057139A), Dec 22, 1991: Cessna 182P, Hanging Rock, OH, Substantial damage, 1 fatal. Struck trees on rocky hill during sdf approach. Witness heard engine miss and die. Serious carb icing conditions.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
