## Probable cause

A POWER LOSS OF UNDETERMINED ORIGIN OVER UNSUITABLE TERRAIN.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power, climb - to cruise
  - reason for occurrence undetermined (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with object, landing - flare/touchdown
  - object - utility pole (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE AIRPLANE ENGINE LOST POWER DURING A CLIMB AND THE PILOT MADE A FORCED LANDING ON A ROADWAY. THE ENGINE WAS TEST RUN AND THE FUEL SERVO TEST FLOWED SATISFACTORILY. NO EVIDENCE OF CONTAMINATION OR BLOCKAGE WAS FOUND WITH THE FUEL SYSTEM. THE PILOT REPORTED THE POWER LOSS HAD OCCURRED ONCE BEFORE 2 WEEKS EARLIER. WHEN THE AIRPLANE AND ENGINE WERE CHECKED BY A MECHANIC NO ANOMALIES WERE FOUND AND THE AIRPLANE WAS RETURNED TO FLYING STATUS. THE CAUSE OF THE POWER LOSS COULD NOT BE DETERMINED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920209002469A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920209002469A), Feb 9, 1992: Piper PA32R301, New York, NY, Substantial damage. Reported rough engine. Elected land on road. Hit power pole. Black smoke seen by witness. No defect.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
