## Probable cause

THE STUDENT PILOT'S FAILURE TO PROPERLY COMPENSATE FOR THE CROSSWIND CONDITION AND TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE AFTER LANDING. CONTRIBUTING TO THE ACCIDENT WAS THE CROSSWIND.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - ground

## Analysis

THE STUDENT PILOT WAS ON A SOLO CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHT. HE STATED THAT, 'SHORTLY AFTER LANDING, THE AIRCRAFT VEERED...TO THE LEFT. ATTEMPTS TO REGAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL FAILED. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED TO ROLL OFF THE RUNWAY, ACROSS THE...APRON AND DOWN AN EMBANKMENT.' THE STUDENT ALSO REPORTED THAT THE WINDS WERE FROM APPROXIMATELY 350 DEGREES AT ABOUT 10 KNOTS, WITH GUSTS TO ABOUT 20 KNOTS. HE HAD 34.8 HOURS OF TOTAL FLIGHT EXPERIENCE, WITH 6.9 HOURS OF SOLO FLIGHT TIME.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920405009249A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920405009249A), Apr 5, 1992: Cessna 152, Moneta, VA, Substantial damage. Weather vaned off runway. Jumped a ditch and struck embankment. Wind gust exceeded crosswind component.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
