## Probable cause

THE FAILURE OF THE PILOT TO COMPENSATE FOR ADVERSE WINDS, WHICH RESULTED IN A BOUNCED LANDING, SUBSEQUENT LOSS OF AIRSPEED AND AIRPLANE CONTROL.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, landing - aborted
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - recovery from bounced landing - improper, pilot in command
  - airspeed - not attained, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with object, takeoff - initial climb
  - object - tree(s)

## Analysis

THE STUDENT PILOT WAS UNABLE TO COMPENSATE FOR ADVERSE CROSSWINDS DURING LANDING. HE STARTED TO ABORT THE SECOND LANDING, BUT THE AIRPLANE BOUNCED ON THE RUNWAY, AND HE WAS UNABLE TO ATTAIN ADEQUATE AIRSPEED AND ALTITUDE BEFORE THE AIRPLANE STRUCK A TREE. RUNWAY 21 IS 26 FEET WIDE. THE PILOT HAD 71.2 HOURS TOTAL FLIGHT TIME, WITH 10.3 HOURS IN THE LAST 90 DAYS.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
