## Probable cause

THE STUDENT PILOT'S ALCOHOLIC IMPAIRMENT OF EFFICIENCY AND JUDGEMENT WHICH LED TO HIS GEOGRAPHICAL DISORIENTATION AND EVENTUAL FUEL EXHAUSTION AND TOTAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER, AND HIS FAILURE TO MAINTAIN AIRSPEED DURING THE FORCED LANDING RESULTING IN A STALL/SPIN. A FACTOR WHICH CONTRIBUTED TO THE ACCIDENT WAS THE DARK NIGHT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, maneuvering
  - fluid,fuel - exhaustion (cause)
  - became lost/disoriented - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
  - impairment(alcohol), pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, maneuvering
- Loss of control - in flight, maneuvering
  - light condition - dark night (contributing factor)
  - airspeed - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - stall/spin - inadvertent, pilot in command
- In flight collision with terrain/water, maneuvering

## Analysis

THE STUDENT PILOT AND PASSENGER WERE ON A LOCAL AREA NIGHT FLIGHT FOR ABOUT 2 HRS WHEN THE PILOT BECAME DISORIENTED. WHILE CIRCLING AT A LOW ALTITUDE THE ENGINE LOST POWER. A GROUND WITNESS STATED '... THE PLANE WENT INTO A COMPLETE SPIN WHILE FALLING STRAIGHT DOWN LIKE A ROCK ...' EXAMINATION OF THE WRECKAGE REVEALED VERY LITTLE FUEL IN THE LEFT TANK AND NO FUEL IN THE RIGHT TANK. WHEN THE POLICE AND EMS PERSONNEL ARRIVED AT THE ACCIDENT SITE THEY SMELLED ALCOHOL ON BOTH THE PILOT AND PASSENGER. THE PILOT ADMITTED THAT HE HAD 8 BEERS. THE RESULTS OF A BLOOD ALCOHOL TEST ON THE PILOT WAS 0.178%.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920618021169A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920618021169A), Jun 18, 1992: Cessna 150F, Huron, OH, Destroyed. Low on fuel and disoriented. Engine quit while circling. Stalled impacted open field. Pilot alcohol level point 178

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
