## Probable cause

THE LOSS OF AIRPLANE CONTROL DURING A CROSSWIND LANDING RESULTING IN A HARD BOUNCED LANDING AND A COLLISION WITH THE RUNWAY.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, landing - flare/touchdown
  - weather condition - unfavorable wind
  - compensation for wind conditions - improper, pilot in command (cause)
  - proper alignment - not maintained, pilot in command
  - aircraft control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - runway

## Analysis

THE AIRPLANE WAS LANDING ON RUNWAY 22L. THE WIND WAS REPORTED FROM 286 DEGREES AT 16 GUSTING TO 21 KNOTS. THE PILOT SAID, '...ON LANDING...CORRECTED FOR CROSSWIND WITH RIGHT SIDESLIP....I REDUCED POWER TO FLIGHT IDLE AND AIRCRAFT ROLLED TO THE LEFT. I THEN APPLIED POWER ON LEFT ENGINE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL, AIRCRAFT TOUCHED DOWN ON LEFT SIDE OF RUNWAY AND...VEERED LEFT OFF THE RUNWAY.' EXAMINATION REVEALED DAMAGE TO THE LEFT WING TIP, THE RIGHT ENGINE PROPELLERS AND THE NOSE GEAR TRUNION. TESTING WAS ACCOMPLISHED ON THE PROPELLER BLADE ANGLES, ENGINE CONTROL CABLES, THE STALL WARNING SYSTEM AND THE FLIGHT CONTROLS. NO DISCREPANCIES WERE NOTED.

## Other investigations on N2691W (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN15LA202](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN15LA202), Apr 17, 2015: Fairchild SA227 AC (N2691W), Rifle, CO, substantial damage. Probable cause: The uncontained engine failure due to the fatigue failure of the second-stage turbine rotor disk.
