## Probable cause

A COLLISION WITH TREES AFTER THE PILOT FAILED TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL DURING AN ABORTED LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, landing - aborted
  - recovery from bounced landing - improper, pilot in command
  - go-around - performed, pilot in command
  - flight controls - improper use of, pilot in command (cause)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with object, landing - aborted
  - object - tree(s)

## Analysis

THE PILOT WAS LANDING WHEN A GUST OF WIND CAUSED THE AIRPLANE TO DROP TO THE RUNWAY FROM 10 FEET. THE AIRPLANE BOUNCED BACK INTO THE AIR AND WAS POINTED TOWARD SOME TREES ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT APPLIED POWER AND INITIATED A GO-AROUND. HE SAID HE TURNED RIGHT, HOWEVER THE AIRPLANE CONTINUED TO DRIFT LEFT AND STRUCK THE TREES 60 FEET LEFT OF THE RUNWAY, AT A HEIGHT OF 30 TO 40 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920801028499A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920801028499A), Aug 1, 1992: Bbavia 7ECA, East Liverpool, OH, Substantial damage. Bounced landing. Began go around off runway alignment. Struck tree tops. Aircraft rotated into trees.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
