## Probable cause

THE PILOT INADVERTENTLY PORPOISED THE AIRPLANE DURING THE LANDING AND IMPROPER RECOVERY FROM A BOUNCED LANDING. A FACTOR IN THIS ACCIDENT WAS THE PILOT'S LACK OF EXPERIENCE IN THIS TYPE OF AIRCRAFT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Hard landing, landing - roll
  - porpoise/pilot-induced oscillation - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of total experience in type of aircraft, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - recovery from bounced landing - improper, pilot in command (cause)
  - landing gear,nose gear - overload
- Nose over, landing - roll

## Analysis

AFTER TOUCHDOWN THE AIRPLANE BEGAN TO PORPOISE AND THE PROPELLER STRUCK THE RUNWAY. THE AIRPLANE SLID DOWN THE RUNWAY ON ITS NOSE FOR APPROXIMATELY 50 FEET, NOSED OVER AND CAUGHT FIRE. THIS WAS THE PILOT'S INITIAL FLIGHT IN THIS AIRPLANE AND HIS FIRST LANDING, THE PILOT HAD A TOTAL FLIGHT TIME IN THIS MAKE AND MODEL AIRPLANE OF LESS THE 1 HOUR.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920806029519A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920806029519A), Aug 6, 1992: Franklin, PA, Destroyed. Porpoised landing. Prop hit runway. Slid on nose. Nosed over. Burned. First landing in homebuilt. No check out.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
