## Probable cause

AN INADVERTENT STALL AFTER THE PILOT FAILED TO ATTAIN FLYING SPEED DUE TO A PREMATURE LIFTOFF.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, takeoff - initial climb
  - lift-off - premature, pilot in command (cause)
  - proper climb rate - not attained, pilot in command (cause)
  - stall - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled
  - terrain condition - crop

## Analysis

THE PILOT DEPARTED FROM A GRASS STRIP WITH GRASS 3 TO 5 INCHES TALL. HE FAILED TO OBTAIN FLYING SPEED DUE TO THE TALL GRASS AND 'PULLED' THE AIRPLANE INTO THE AIR. WHILE FLYING JUST ABOVE THE 6 TO 8 FOOT TALL CORN OFF THE END OF THE RUNWAY, THE STALL WARNING HORN SOUNDED, FOLLOWED BY THE LEFT WING DROPPING AND THE AIRPLANE DESCENDED INTO THE CORN FIELD. THE AIRPLANE CAME TO REST UPSIDE DOWN.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19921007041279A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19921007041279A), Oct 7, 1992: Cessna 172F, Washington Cour, OH, Substantial damage. Pulled aircraft off unmowed runway. Stayed behind power curve and stall mushed into cornfield. Nosed over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
