## Probable cause

THE FAILURE OF THE PILOT TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL DURING LANDING WHICH RESULTED IN THE AIRPLANE STRIKING A DRAINAGE DITCH. FACTORS RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WERE THE CROSSWIND AND THE DRAINAGE DITCH.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, landing - flare/touchdown
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
  - flight controls - improper use of, pilot in command (cause)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled
  - terrain condition - ditch (contributing factor)
- Gear collapsed, landing - roll
  - landing gear - overload

## Analysis

DURING LANDING WITH A RIGHT CROSSWIND, THE PILOT REPORTED THE AIRPLANE, 'BOUNCED SLIGHTLY' AND DRIFTED LEFT OFF THE RUNWAY AFTER TOUCHDOWN. THE PILOT ADDED POWER AND GOT AIRBORNE; HOWEVER, HE SAID HE FELT HE, '...WAS NOT IN CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE AND PURPOSELY CUT THE POWER RATHER THAN GO AROUND....' THE AIRPLANE TOUCHED DOWN IN A LEVEL ATTITUDE, IN A GRASSY AREA NEXT TO THE RUNWAY AND ANGLED TOWARD THE RUNWAY. DURING THE GROUND ROLL, THE AIRPLANE PASSED OVER A DRAINAGE DITCH WHICH COLLAPSED THE NOSE WHEEL AND LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19921018042339A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19921018042339A), Oct 18, 1992: Cessna 210L, Cincinnati, OH, Substantial damage. Wind caused a drift off runway on landing. Added power cleared marker. Cut power. Hit culvert. Failed to go around.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
