## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S IMPROPERLY PLANNED APPROACH, RESULTING IN A TOUCHDOWN TOO FAR DOWN THE RUNWAY, WITH EXCESSIVE AIRSPEED, AND THE SUBSEQUENT ENCOUNTER WITH SOFT TERRAIN AND NOSE OVER.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - soft
  - planned approach - misjudged, pilot in command (cause)
  - proper touchdown point - not attained, pilot in command (cause)
  - airspeed - excessive, pilot in command (cause)
- Nose over, landing - roll

## Analysis

THE PILOT WAS CONDUCTING A LANDING AT THE GRASS AIRSTRIP. HE SAID, 'TOUCHDOWN WAS SLIGHTLY LONG, AT 80 MPH. BRAKING ACTION [WAS] NIL...PLANNED TO GROUND LOOP AT THE END...NOSE GEAR CAUGHT IN SOFT GROUND. AIRCRAFT FLIPPED OVER.' THE FAA REPORT STATED, 'HE LANDED HALFWAY DOWN THE RUNWAY WITH TOO MUCH SPEED.'

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19921210056669A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19921210056669A), Dec 10, 1992: Piper PA28235, Cheriton, VA, Substantial damage. Landed long on short wet grass strip unable to stop or go around. Tried to ground loop. Dug in and nosed over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
