## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL. CONTRIBUTING WAS THE LACK OF RECENCY OF EXPERIENCE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of recent experience, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- Nose gear collapsed, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - soft
  - landing gear,nose gear - overload

## Analysis

THE PILOT HAD MADE A SERIES OF 'STOP AND GO' LANDINGS. ON THE LAST LANDING HE EXPERIENCED A VIBRATION IN THE NOSE GEAR AFTER THE GEAR MADE CONTACT WITH THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT COULD NOT MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE AND IT DEPARTED THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY SURFACE. AS THE AIRPLANE ENTERED THE SOFT GRASSY AREA THE NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED. THE PILOT REPORTED NO MECHANICAL MALFUNCTION. HE ALSO REPORTED THAT THE ACCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED BY 'GETTING MORE TIME IN, OFTEN, AND REGULAR.'

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19930407008089A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930407008089A), Apr 7, 1993: Cessna 177B, Brookville, OH, Substantial damage. Reported nose wheel shimmy on landing. Lost control. Ran off runway. Nose gear sheared. Aircraft nosed over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
