## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S INADEQUATE COMPENSATION FOR WIND CONDITIONS AND FAILURE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE. THE CROSSWIND WAS A RELATED FACTOR.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of total experience, pilot in command
  - aircraft control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water collision with object, landing - roll
  - object - airport facility

## Analysis

THE STUDENT PILOT SAID THAT DURING THE APPROACH, AND JUST PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN, THE AIRPLANE DRIFTED TO THE LEFT OF THE RUNWAY BECAUSE OF A RIGHT CROSSWIND. THE PILOT SAID HE CORRECTED; HOWEVER, DURING THE LANDING ROLL, THE AIRPLANE DEPARTED THE RUNWAY SURFACE AND STRUCK THE PRECISION APPROACH PATH INDICATOR.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19930413009349A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930413009349A), Apr 13, 1993: Piper PA28161, Farmingdale, NY, Substantial damage. Lost directional control landing in crosswind. Left the runway and collided with the PAPI facility.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
