## Probable cause

A POWER LOSS DUE TO A COLLAPSED AIR DUCT AND A CONSEQUENT BLOCKAGE OF INDUCTION AIR, WHICH RESULTED IN A FORCED LANDING AND AN ON GROUND COLLISION WITH A DITCH.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - mech failure/malf, takeoff - initial climb
  - induction air ducting - collapsed (cause)
  - ram/induction air - blocked(total) (contributing factor)
- Forced landing, maneuvering - turn to landing area (emergency)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - ditch

## Analysis

THE ENGINE LOST POWER AFTER THE AIRPLANE BECAME AIRBORNE. THE PILOT MADE A FORCED LANDING IN A FIELD JUST BEYOND THE DEPARTURE END OF, AND TO THE SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. THE AIRPLANE STRUCK A DITCH AND THE LANDING GEAR COLLAPSED. POST ACCIDENT EXAMINATION OF THE AIRPLANE BY THE FAA FOUND THE AIR INTAKE DUCT ASSEMBLY COLLAPSED. ADDITIONALLY, THEY REPORTED THAT THE LOWER ENGINE COWLING WAS NOT DAMAGED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19930630021309A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930630021309A), Jun 30, 1993: Beech 23BEECH, Montgomery, NY, Substantial damage. Engine lost power after liftoff. Landed on right side of runway. Nose wheel collpased.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
