## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power, climb - to cruise
  - reason for occurrence undetermined (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with terrain/water, landing - flare/touchdown
- Complete gear collapsed, landing
- On ground/water collision with object, landing
  - object - animal(s) (contributing factor)
  - object - fence (contributing factor)

## Analysis

WHILE CLIMBING AFTER TAKEOFF, THE ENG SURGED TWICE, THEN QUIT. THE PLT REPOSITIONED THE FUEL SELECTOR, CHECKED THAT THE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP WAS 'ON' & RESTARTED THE ENG, THEN STARTED TO RETURN TO THE DEPARTURE ARPT. HOWEVER, ABOUT 1 MIN LATER, THE ENG LOST POWER AGAIN & AN OFF ARPT LANDING WAS MADE. DURING THE LANDING, THE GEAR COLLAPSED & THE ACFT SLID TO A STOP, BUT STRUCK A COW & A SMALL ELECTRIC FENCE BEFORE COMING TO REST. EXAMS OF THE ACFT SYSTEMS WERE MADE, BUT NO REASON FOR THE LOSS OF POWER COULD BE FOUND.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19840914049189A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19840914049189A), Sep 14, 1984: Piper PA32301, Burley, ID, Destroyed. Engine failed returning to airport. Landed in field. During testing, crankcase vented by parts of failed tappets.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
