## Probable cause

A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER FOR UNDETERMINED REASONS. A FACTOR IN THE ACCIDENT WAS THE LACK OF SUITABLE TERRAIN FOR A FORCED LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(partial) - nonmechanical, cruise - normal
  - reason for occurrence undetermined (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
  - terrain condition - none suitable (contributing factor)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - emergency
  - terrain condition - mountainous/hilly (contributing factor)
- Roll over, landing - flare/touchdown

## Analysis

DURING CRUISE FLIGHT, THE PILOT REPORTED THAT THE ENGINE LOST POWER. A FORCED LANDING WAS INTIATED ON SLOPING TERRAIN. THE HELICOPTER COLLIDED WITH THE TERRAIN AND ROLLED OVER. THE WRECKAGE WAS REMOVED FOR INSPECTION. AN ENGINE TEST RUN WAS PERFORMED WITH NO MECHANICAL FAILURES OR MALFUNCTIONS REPORTED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19890530013299A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19890530013299A), May 30, 1989: Bell 206B, Lewiston, ID, Substantial damage. Reported overspeed condition from governor malfunction. Allowed rotor speed decay. Landed side slope. Rolled over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
