## Probable cause

THE PILOT MISJUDGED THE AIRCRAFT HEIGHT ABOVE WATER WHILE ATTEMPTING TO LAND ON A LAKE. A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR WAS THE SMOOTH, GLASSY WATER SURFACE CONDITIONS ON THE LAKE.

## Analysis

THE PILOT WAS FLYING A VFR TRAFFIC PATTERN FOR LANDING ON A LAKE THAT HAD SMOOTH, GLASSY SURFACE CONDITIONS. WHILE TURNING FROM BASE LEG TO FINAL APPROACH, HE MISJUDGED THE AIRCRAFT HEIGHT ABOVE THE WATER, THE LEFT WING IMPACTED WATER, AND THE AIRCRAFT CARTWHEELED. ABOUT 5 MIN AFTER COMING TO REST, THE AIRCRAFT SANK IN WATER THAT WAS ABOUT 50 FT DEEP.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight collision with terrain/water, approach - vfr pattern - base leg/base to final
  - terrain condition - water,glassy (contributing factor)
  - altitude - misjudged, pilot in command (cause)

## Other investigations on N2582P (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
