## Probable cause

FAILURE OF THE PILOT TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL. FACTORS RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WERE: THE PILOT'S SELECTION OF UNSUITABLE TERRAIN (CLOSED/ROUGH RUNWAY), AND THE CROSSWIND.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - unsuitable terrain or takeoff/landing/taxi area - selected, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - airport facilities,runway/landing area condition - rough/uneven (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water collision with object, landing - roll
  - object - fence (contributing factor)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - ditch (contributing factor)

## Analysis

DURING A LANDING ON A CLOSED/ROUGH/UNMAINTAINED DIRT STRIP, THE AIRPLANE TOUCHED DOWN LEFT OF CENTERLINE. THE PILOT WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL. THE AIRPLANE TRAVELED OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY, COLLIDED WITH A FENCE & ENCOUNTERED A DITCH. THERE WERE NO REPORTED MECHANICAL FAILURES OR MALFUNCTIONS WITH THE AIRPLANE BEFORE THE ACCIDENT.
