## Probable cause

THE RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR DID NOT FULLY EXTEND FOR AN UNDETERMINED REASON. FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTED TO THE ACCIDENT WERE: AN ENGINE POWER LOSS FOR UNKNOWN REASONS AND THE ROUGH TERRAIN.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power, climb - to cruise
  - reason for occurrence undetermined (contributing factor)
- Forced landing, landing - flare/touchdown
- Gear not extended, landing - flare/touchdown
  - landing gear,normal retraction/extension assembly - undetermined (cause)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - flare/touchdown
  - terrain condition - rough/uneven (contributing factor)

## Analysis

SHORTLY AFTER TAKE-OFF, THE PILOT NOTED THAT THE CYLINDER HEAD TEMPERATURE AND THE OIL TEMPERATURE WERE NEAR REDLINE. THE PILOT REDUCED POWER AND NOTED THAT THE MANIFOLD PRESSURE WAS BELOW NORMAL. THE PILOT TURNED BACK TO THE RUNWAY AND WAS ABLE TO EXTEND THE LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR AND THE TAIL WHEEL ONLY. THE AIRPLANE LANDED ON THE RUNWAY WITH POWER AT IDLE. THE AIRPLANE SLIDE OFF THE RUNWAY AND BROKE APART AS IT SLID TO A STOP ON THE ROUGH TERRAIN. THE AIRPLANE WAS TO PARTICIPATE IN AN AIR RACE AND WAS TEST RUNNING THE ENGINE PRIOR TO THE START. THE ENGINE HAD BEEN MODIFIED FOR THE PURPOSE OF AIR RACING.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19890911037629A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19890911037629A), Sep 11, 1989: Amtr YAK11, Reno, NV, Substantial damage. Engine overheated on climbout and low oil pressure. Turned back. Unable lower left gear, landed, slid off runway.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
