## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S INADEQUATE COMPENSATION FOR WIND CONDITIONS AND HIS FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL. FACTORS RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WERE: UNFAVORABLE/GUSTY WIND CONDITIONS AND THE BERM.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - weather condition - unfavorable wind (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - ground loop/swerve - uncontrolled
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - berm (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PLT RPRTD THAT DURING THE LANDING, THE ACFT TOUCHED DOWN, THEN BECAME AIRBORNE. IT RESETTLED TO THE RWY AGAIN & POWER WAS REDUCED, THEN A SUDDEN GUST OF WIND FROM THE RIGHT RAISED THE RIGHT WING. THE PLT TRIED TO CORRECT WITH RIGHT RUDDER & AILERON CONTROL, BUT HE WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL. SUBSEQUENTLY, THE ACFT VEERED OFF THE RWY & COLLIDED WITH A BERM. NO PREIMPACT MECHANICAL FAILURE OR MALFUNCTION WAS RPRTD. THE PLT RPRTD THE WIND WAS FROM 050 DEG AT 15 TO 20 KTS.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19891005039169A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19891005039169A), Oct 5, 1989: Piper PA32300, Hoonah, AK, Substantial damage. Wind gust raised a wing after ballooning on landing. Lost control, veered off runway into berm.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
