## Probable cause

LOSS OF ENGINE POWER DUE TO CARBURETOR ICING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, climb
  - weather condition - carburetor icing conditions (cause)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - emergency
  - terrain condition - none suitable (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT HAD JUST TAKEN OFF FROM A PRIVATE AIRSTRIP AND WAS CLIMBING IN THE TRAFFIC PATTERN WHEN THE ENGINE QUIT. THE PILOT WAS UNABLE TO RETURN TO THE AIRSTRIP AND THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED TREES 1/4 MILE WEST OF THE RUNWAY. SUBSEQUENT EXAMINATION FAILED TO DETERMINE CAUSE OF ENGINE QUITING. ICING CHARTS INDICATE MODERATE PROBABILITY OF CARB ICING WEATHER CONDITIONS.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19891118045769A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19891118045769A), Nov 18, 1989: Cessna STC140, Amboy, WA, Destroyed. Reported engine quit on climbout. Damage indicates a stall on turnback to runway. Carburetor icing prevelant.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
