## Probable cause

INADEQUATE MAINTENANCE WHICH RESULTED IN A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER DURING THE INITIAL CLIMB SHORTLY AFTER TAKEOFF.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(partial) - mech failure/malf, takeoff - initial climb
  - maintenance, inspection - inadequate, other maintenance personnel (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with object, descent - emergency
  - object - tree(s)

## Analysis

DURING THE INITIAL CLIMB AFTER DEPARTURE FROM THE AIRPORT, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO SPUTTER AND LOSE POWER. THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO RETURN TO THE RUNWAY, HOWEVER, DUE TO INSUFFICIENT ALTITUDE, THE AIRPLANE COLLIDED WITH A TREE AND SUBSEQUENTLY THE TERRAIN. DURING THE ENGINE INSPECTION, SEVERAL PRE-EXISTING MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS WERE IDENTIFIED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900224002599A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900224002599A), Feb 24, 1990: Amtrpt PITTSSPECS1C, Portland, OR, Destroyed. Engine lost power on climbout. Hit tree trying to return.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
