## Probable cause

PILOT'S FAILURE TO EXTEND THE LANDING GEAR PRIOR TO LANDING AFTER HAVING BEEN DISTRACTED BY TRAFFIC. A MITIGATING FACTOR IN THIS ACCIDENT WAS THE FACT THAT THE GEAR WARNING HORN DID NOT FUNCTION.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Gear not extended, landing
  - landing gear, gear warning system - inoperative (contributing factor)
  - wheels up landing - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

THE PILOT OF THE MOONEY M-20E LANDED GEAR-UP AFTER FAILING TO EXTEND THE LANDING GEAR AFTER BEING DISTRACTED BY OTHER AIR TRAFFIC. INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE GEAR WARNING HORN WAS NOT FUNCTIONING.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900904065679A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900904065679A), Sep 4, 1990: Mooney M20E, Cheyenne, WY, Substantial damage. Distracted by traffic landed gear up. Gear warning horn inoperative.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
