## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL WHILE APPLYING BRAKES AFTER LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - ground loop/swerve - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

THE PILOT OF THE CESSNA 182P DID NOT REALIZE THAT THE AIRFIELD WHERE HE WAS LANDING HAD AN UP GRADE AND A DIP IN IT. AFTER TOUCHDOWN, THE AIRCRAFT BECAME AIRBORNE WHEN CROSSING THE DIP, AND THE PILOT LOST DIRECTIONAL AFTER IT TOUCHED DOWN A SECOND TIME, WHEN HE USED HARD BRAKE APPLICATION.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900908044159A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900908044159A), Sep 8, 1990: Cessna 182P, Lummi Island, WA, Substantial damage. Became airborne on dip in runway. Aircraft floated. Used hard braking on second touchdown. Skidded into a ditch.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
