## Probable cause

THE SELECTION OF THE WRONG RUNWAY BY THE OWNER/STUDENT PILOT AND HIS FAILURE TO COMPENSATE FOR THE WIND DURING LANDING GROUND ROLL.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - weather condition - high wind (contributing factor)
  - wrong runway - selected, copilot/second pilot (cause)
  - weather condition - tailwind (contributing factor)
  - compensation for wind conditions - not performed, copilot/second pilot (cause)
  - lack of total experience, copilot/second pilot (contributing factor)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
- Nose over, landing - roll

## Analysis

THERE WAS A STUDENT PILOT IN THE LEFT SEAT WHO WAS FLYING THE AIRCRAFT. A PRIVATE PILOT (PIC) WAS IN THE RIGHT SEAT. THE STUDENT PILOT (PASSENGER) ATTEMPTED TO LAND ON RWY 25 IN STRONG GUSTY QUARTERING TAILWIND CONDITIONS AND LOST CONTROL DURING GND LANDING ROLL. THE ACFT DEPARTED THE SIDE OF THE 5200 BY 100 FT RWY, IMPACTED TERRAIN AND NOSED OVER. WX OBS AT THE TIME RECORDED THE WIND FROM 340 DEGREES AT 11 GUSTING TO 18 KNOTS, WHICH FAVORED RWY 03.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
