## Probable cause

PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN CLEARANCE FROM A ROAD SIGN DURING LANDING GROUND ROLL. A FACTOR IN THE ACCIDENT WAS THE FAILURE OF THE ENGINE EXHAUST SYSTEM WHICH RESULTED IN HIGH ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- On ground/water collision with object, landing - roll
  - object - sign
  - exhaust system - failure,total (contributing factor)
  - emergency procedure - performed, pilot in command
  - clearance - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

THE ACFT ENGINE EXHAUST SYSTEM FAILED DURING CRUISE FLT, WHICH ALLOWED EXHAUST GAS ONTO THE ENGINE OIL PAN, CAUSING A RAPID RISE IN ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE. THE PILOT ELECTED TO MAKE A PRECAUTIONARY LDG ON A PUBLIC ROAD. THE ACFT IMPACTED A ROAD SIGN DURING GROUND LANDING ROLL AND THE PILOT LOST CONTROL. THE ACFT NOSED DOWN, STRUCK THE GROUND AND CARTWHEELED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900923041529A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900923041529A), Sep 23, 1990: Amtr KR2, Shaniko, OR, Substantial damage. Low oil pressure. Landed on road to check. Struck road sign and cartwheeled. Turbo exhaust pipe broke. Heated oil.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
