## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S INTENTIONAL BUZZING OF UNINHABITED ISLAND IN THE GREAT SALT LAKE AND HIS MISJUDGING THE TIMING OF A PULL-UP MANEUVER TO CLEAR RISING TERRAIN OF A RIDGELINE.

## Analysis

THE PILOT DESCENDED TO A LOW ALTITUDE BEFORE REACHING AN UNINHABITED ISLAND IN THE GREAT SALT LAKE AND ATTEMPTED A PULL-UP MANEUVER TO FLY OVER A RIDGELINE ON THE ISLAND. THE LEFT WING TIP IMPACTED RISING TERRAIN NEAR THE TOP OF THE RIDGELINE. THE AIRCRAFT CARTWHEELED OVER THE RIDGELINE, TRAVELED 750 FT AND IMPACTED THE GROUND.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19901130052269A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19901130052269A), Nov 30, 1990: Piper PA28R180, Salt Lake City, UT, Destroyed, 2 fatal. Caught a wing on a island ridge. Cartwheeled and burned. Was observed at 25FT AGL.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
