## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S INADEQUATE COMPENSATION FOR THE WIND CONDITIONS.

## Analysis

THE PILOT REPORTED THAT A NORMAL APPROACH FOR LANDING TO THE WEST WAS MADE WITH A CROSS WIND FROM THE SOUTH AT 15 KTS, GUSTING TO 25 KTS. JUST PRIOR TO TOUCH DOWN, A GUST OF WIND CAUSED THE AIRPLANE TO BALLOON 30 FEET AGL. THE PILOT APPLIED FULL POWER TO GO-AROUND, HOWEVER, A DOWN DRAFT FORCED THE AIRPLANE TO DESCEND, COLLIDING WITH THE TERRAIN ON THE RIGHT WING AND RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR. THE PILOT REPORTED THAT THERE WERE NO MECHANICAL FAILURES OR MALFUNCTIONS WITH THE AIRPLANE AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, approach - vfr pattern - final approach
  - weather condition - gusts (contributing factor)
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, go-around (vfr)
  - weather condition - downdraft (contributing factor)
  - terrain condition - runway

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19901122051119A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19901122051119A), Nov 22, 1990: Cessna 182L, Kamiah, ID, Substantial damage. Tried to land on a short Private strip with gusty crosswind that FAR exceeded aircrafts crosswind max component.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
