## Probable cause

THE CERTIFIED FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR'S INABILITY TO REGAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL AFTER IT WAS LOST BY HIS DUAL STUDENT ON AN ICY, SNOWY RUNWAY.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - icy
  - directional control - not maintained, dual student (cause)
  - terrain condition - snow covered
  - relinquishing of control - not obtained, pilot in command(cfi) (cause)
- Nose over, landing - roll

## Analysis

THE CERTIFIED FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR ATTEMPTED TO CORRECT HIS STUDENT'S LEFT DRIFT FROM THE RUNWAY CENTERLINE BY VERBAL CAUTION. WHEN THAT FAILED, HE ATTEMPTED TO TAKE CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT, BUT WAS UNABLE TO OVERPOWER HIS STUDENT'S LEFT RUDDER INPUT. THE AIRCRAFT DRIFTED OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY AND NOSED OVER IN A SNOWBANK.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19901227056359A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19901227056359A), Dec 27, 1990: Cessna 152, Logan, UT, Substantial damage. Veered to left on landing. Advised student to correct. Student added power. Unable overpower student. Hit snowbank.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
