## Probable cause

A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER DUE TO FUEL STARVATION BECAUSE OF AN INADEQUATE COMPONENT AND INADEQUATE FUEL SYSTEM DESIGN.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(partial) - mech failure/malf, maneuvering
  - fuel system, electric boost pump - pressure too low (cause)
  - acft/equip,inadequate aircraft component, manufacturer (cause)
  - acft/equip,inadequate design, manufacturer (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with object, landing
  - object - tree(s)
  - unsuitable terrain or takeoff/landing/taxi area - selected, pilot in command (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT OF THE AMATEUR-BUILT OSPREY II AMPHIBIAN COLLIDED WITH TREES AFTER THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED A POWER LOSS. THE ELECTRIC AUTOMOTIVE-TYPE BOOST PUMP WAS KNOWN TO SUSTAIN A PRESSURE DROP FROM 6 PSI TO .5 PSI AFTER THREE MINUTES OF OPERATION. THAT PUMP WAS USED TO PUMP FUEL FROM THE FUSELAGE TANKS TO THE PEDESTAL-MOUNTED ENGINE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910316005469A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910316005469A), Mar 16, 1991: Amtros OSPREY2, Aurora, OR, Substantial damage. Engine quit. Tried to return but crashed in orchard short of runway. Auto fuel pump to transfer fuel was installed.

## Other investigations on N69CK (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA89LA141](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA89LA141), Jul 27, 1989: King Osprey II (N69CK), West Linn, OR, substantial damage. Probable cause: THE PILOT DID NOT PROPERLY RECOVER FROM A BOUNCED WATER LANDING.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
