## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN RUNWAY ALIGMENT. FACTORS INCLUDE HIGH VEGETATION, AND AN INADVERENT GROUND LOOP/SWERVE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - proper alignment - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - terrain condition - crop (contributing factor)
  - ground loop/swerve - inadvertent (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT OF THE GRUMAN G-164A WAS LANDINGG AT A PRIVATE AGRICULTURAL AIRSTRIP, WHEN THE SPRAY BOOM CONTACTED SOME TALL WHEAT GROWING NEAR THE EDGE OF THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT STATED THAT JUST AS THE TAILWHEEL WAS BEING LOWERED TO THE GROUND, THE LEFT WING SPRAY BOOM STRUCK THE WHEAT, CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO TURN SHARPLY TO THE LET. THE AIRCRAFT THE BEGAN TO SLIDE SIDEWAYS, EVENTUALLY COLLAPSING THE RIGHT MAIN GEAR.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910724032089A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910724032089A), Jul 24, 1991: Scwzer G164A, Hamer, ID, Substantial damage. Spray boom caught tall wheat on edge of ag strip on landing. Rotated into wheat. Slid sideways collapsed right gear

## Other investigations on N6702Q (2)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA08CA183](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA08CA183), Aug 18, 2008: Grumman Acft Eng G-164A (N6702Q), Hazelton, ID, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate compensation for the tailwind and failure to attain and maintain airspeed, which resulted in an inadvertent stall. The tailwind was a contributing factor.
- [NTSB SEA05LA146](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA05LA146), Jul 19, 2005: Grumman G-164A (N6702Q), Jerome, ID, substantial damage. Probable cause: Failure to maintain clearance from terrain during takeoff and initial climb. A high density altitude was a factor.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
