## Probable cause

THE FAILURE BY THE PILOT TO CALCULATE AIRCRAFT FUEL COMSUMPTION AND THE PILOT'S POOR INFLIGHT PLANNING. FACTORS RELATING TO THE ACCIDENT WERE THE INADEQUATE PREFLIGHT PLANNING BY THE PILOT, HIS LACK OF QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE, AND HIS DISORIENTATION DURING THE FLIGHT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- On ground/water collision with object, landing - roll
  - object - sign
  - preflight planning/preparation - inadequate, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - qualification, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - became lost/disoriented - inadvertent, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - lack of total experience, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - fuel consumption calculations - not performed, pilot in command (cause)
  - in-flight planning/decision - poor, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

THE PILOT BECAME LOST/DISORIENTED ON A X-COUNTRY FLT WHEN HE FLEW OFF HIS AVAILABLE MAPS. HE DID NOT CALCULATE FUEL CONSUMPTION, BELIEVED HE WAS LOW ON FUEL AND ELECTED TO MAKE A PRECAUTIONARY LANDING ON A PUBLIC ROAD. THE ACFT STRUCK A SIGN ON LANDING ROLL, SWERVED RIGHT AND IMPACTED A GUARD RAIL. ABOUT 9 GALS OF FUEL WAS DRAINED FROM THE 26 GALS CAPACITY FUEL TANKS AFTER THE ACCIDENT. THE STU PILOT DID NOT HAVE A REQUIRED INSTR ENDORSEMENT FOR THE FLT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910802031449A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910802031449A), Aug 2, 1991: Cessna 152, West Yellowston, MT, Substantial damage. Became disorientated en route and beleived low fuel. Landed on a road. Wing hit road sign. Not endorsed for flight.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
