## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S DELAY IN INITIATING A GO-AROUND (ABORTED LANDING) AND HIS IMPROPER RAISING OF THE FLAPS. FACTORS RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WERE: THE HIGH DENSITY ALTITUDE, TAILWIND, AND THE PILOT'S SELECTION OF THE WRONG RUNWAY.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Overrun, takeoff - aborted
  - weather condition - high density altitude (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - tailwind (contributing factor)
  - wrong runway - selected, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - go-around - delayed, pilot in command (cause)
  - raising of flaps - improper, pilot in command (cause)
  - climb - not possible
- On ground/water collision with object, takeoff - aborted
  - object - fence

## Analysis

THE PILOT ENTERED A PATTERN TO LAND ON RUNWAY 29, ALTHOUGH THE WIND WAS FROM 060 DEG AT 8 KTS AND ANOTHER AIRCRAFT WAS IN A PATTERN TO LAND ON RUNWAY 11. THE PILOT REPORTED THAT DURING THE APPROACH TO LAND WITH FULL FLAPS, HE HAD EXCESSIVE AIRSPEED AND ELECTED TO GO AROUND. INSTEAD OF GRADUALLY RETRACTING THE FLAPS, HE RETRACTED THEM 'ALL AT ONCE & TRIED TO CLIMB.' INSTEAD OF CLIMBING, THE AIRCRAFT SETTLED BACK TO THE RUNWAY. BY THAT TIME, THERE WAS INSUFFICIENT RUNWAY REMAINING TO STOP. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED OFF THE END OF THE RUNWAY AND HIT THE PERIMETER FENCE. DENSITY ALTITUDE AT THE AIRPORT WAS ABOUT 5000 FT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910817042489A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910817042489A), Aug 17, 1991: Cessna 177, Nampa, ID, Substantial damage. Tried to land downwind then began belated go around. Dumped flaps, settled and ran off end runway into a fence.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
