## Probable cause

MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL DID NOT PERFORM A PROPER TOP OVERHAUL. THIS RESULTED IN ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO THE FAILURE OF A CONNECTING ROD BEARING. FACTORS INCLUDE THE HARD LANDING RESULTING FROM THE PREMATURE LANDING FLARE BY THE PILOT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - mech failure/malf, climb - to cruise
  - lubricating system,oil port/passage,internal - blocked(total) (cause)
  - maintenance, top overhaul - improper, other maintenance personnel (cause)
  - engine assembly,bearing - seized (cause)
  - engine assembly, connecting rod bolt - fractured (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - flare - premature, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- Nose over, landing - flare/touchdown

## Analysis

THE ACFT ENG LOST POWER ABOUT 1500 FT AGL AND THE PILOT INITIATED AN EMERGENCY FORCED LANDING TO AN OPEN FIELD. THE PILOT MANEUVERED AT A LOW ALTITUDE DURING THE DESCENT, STALLED THE ACFT, WHICH LANDED HARD AND NOSED OVER. EXAM OF THE ENGINE REVEALED THE MAIN BEARINGS HAD SHIFTED, BLOCKED LUBRICATION PORTS, AND THE NO 1 ROD BEARING FAILED FROM LACK OF LUBRICATION. THE ENG HAD 35 HRS FLT TIME SINCE TOP OVERHAUL.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910824036579A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910824036579A), Aug 24, 1991: Cessna T210L, Cheyenne, WY, Substantial damage. Lost power. Landed hard in plowed field. Flipped over. Broken connecting rod. Bearings shifted. Oil starvation.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
