## Probable cause

PILOT'S SELECTION OF UNSUITABLE TERRAIN FOR A PRECAUTIONARY LANDING. FACTORS RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WERE: MOTION SICKNESS OF THE PASSENGER, WET GRASS RUNWAY, THE PILOT'S SELF-INDUCED PRESSURE TO LAND AT THE ACCIDENT AIRPORT, AND THE DITCH.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - precautionary landing - performed, pilot in command
  - physical impairment(motion sickness), passenger (contributing factor)
  - airport facilities,runway/landing area condition - grass
  - airport facilities,runway/landing area condition - wet (contributing factor)
  - unsuitable terrain or takeoff/landing/taxi area - selected, pilot in command (cause)
  - self-induced pressure, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - terrain condition - ditch (contributing factor)

## Analysis

DURING THE LANDING ROLL ON A WET GRASS 1200 FT AIRSTRIP, THERE WAS INSUFFICIENT BRAKING ACTION WHEN THE PILOT APPLIED THE BRAKES. THE PILOT STEERED THE AIRCRAFT OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY TO AVOID AN OVERRUN, BUT THE AIRCRAFT HIT A DITCH AND WAS DAMAGED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910908039949A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910908039949A), Sep 8, 1991: Cessna 182A, Grants Pass, OR, Substantial damage. Landed at wrong airport due to sick passenger. Short grass strip was being watered. Unable stop, ran off into ditch.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
