## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S DELAY IN COMPUTING AIRCRAFT FUEL CONSUMPTION AND HIS FAILURE TO LAND AT AN ALTERNATE AIRPORT ALONG THE ROUTE OF FLIGHT. FACTORS RELATING TO THE ACCIDENT WERE THE TREE BY THE LANDING AREA AND THE IMPROPER MAINTENANCE ADJUSTMENT OF THE RIGHT MAGNETO.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

  - fuel supply - inadequate, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - in-flight planning/decision - improper, pilot in command (cause)
  - object - tree(s)
  - unsuitable terrain or takeoff/landing/taxi area - selected, pilot in command (cause)

THE PILOT INITIATED A PRECAUTIONARY LANDING ON A GRAVEL ROAD WHEN THE ACFT RAN LOW ON FUEL BEFORE REACHING THE DEST ON A VFR X-COUNTRY FLT. THE ACFT IMPACTED A TREE BESIDE THE ROAD DURING LANDING GROUND ROLL. EXAM OF THE WRECKAGE REVEALED 3 GAL FUEL REMAINING AND IMPROPER TIMING OF THE RT MAG.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
