## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S INADVERTENT ACTIVATION OF THE FUEL BOOST PUMP. FACTORS TO THE ACCIDENT WERE: POOR AIRCRAFT PREFLIGHT. DIVERTED ATTENTION, AND INADEQUATE REMEDIAL ACTION.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, climb - to cruise
  - fuel boost pump selector position - inadvertent activation, pilot in command (cause)
  - diverted attention, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - aircraft preflight - poor, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - remedial action - inadequate, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - rough/uneven

## Analysis

SHORTLY AFTER TAKEOFF, THE PILOT WAS IN THE PROCESS OF TURNING OFF THE FRESH AIR BLOWER WHEN THE COCKPIT DOOR OPENED. INSTEAD OF TURNING OFF THE BLOWER, THE PILOT TURNED ON THE FUEL BOOST PUMP. THE ENGINE FLOODED AND LOST POWER. THE FLIGHT RETURNED TO THE AIRPORT, WHERE THE AIRPLANE LANDED SHORT OF THE RUNWAY.

## Other investigations on N1852Z (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
