## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S INADEQUATE WEATHER EVALUATION. A FACTOR IN THE ACCIDENT WAS THE UNFAVORABLE WIND.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- On ground/water encounter with weather, taxi - to takeoff
  - weather condition - unfavorable wind (contributing factor)
  - weather evaluation - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
- Loss of control - in flight, descent - uncontrolled
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled

## Analysis

AT THE BEGINNING OF A PLEASURE FLIGHT, THE STUDENT PILOT WAS TAXIING THE AIRPLANE FOR TAKEOFF WHEN A GUST OF WIND CAUSED THE AIRPLANE TO INADVERTENTLY BECOME AIRBORNE. THE AIRPLANE ATTAINED AN ALTITUDE OF APPROXIMATELY 40 TO 50 FEET WHEN THE LEFT WING DROPPED AND THE AIRPLANE DESCENDED, COLLIDING WITH THE TERRAIN IN A NOSE LOW ATTITUDE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920301004539A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920301004539A), Mar 1, 1992: Amtr AVIDFLYER, Nampa, ID, Substantial damage. On taxi practice wind lifted homebuilt to 45 feet AGL. Stalled, fell on left wing. Cold front was passing airport.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
