## Probable cause

THE LOSS OF ENGINE POWER, CAUSE UNDETERMINED. A FACTOR RELATING TO THE ACCIDENT WAS THE LACK OF SUITABLE TERRAIN FOR A FORCED LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power, descent - normal
  - reason for occurrence undetermined (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with terrain/water, landing
  - terrain condition - none suitable (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT WAS DESCENDING IN IMC ON AN IFR FLT WHEN THE ENGINE LOST POWER. HE INITIATED A FORCED LANDING AND THE ACFT IMPACTED OBSTACLES WHILE HE WAS ATTMEPTING TO LAND ON A ROAD. THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF MALFUNCTION OR FAILURE THAT WOULD HAVE CAUSED THE LOSS OF POWER. THE ENGINE RAN NORMALLY AFTER THE ACCIDENT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920405008809A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920405008809A), Apr 5, 1992: Cessna 177RG, Scappoose, OR, Destroyed. Rough engine and power loss IFR. Broke out, landing on a road struck trees. Engine ran normal on post accident test

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
