## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S INADEQUATE COMPENSATION FOR THE WIND CONDITIONS. FACTORS RELATING TO THE ACCIDENT WERE THE HIGH DENSITY ATTITUDE AND THE DOWNDRAFT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight encounter with weather, approach - vfr pattern - final approach
  - weather condition - downdraft (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - high density altitude (contributing factor)
- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
- Nose over, landing - flare/touchdown

## Analysis

THE PILOT ENCOUNTERED DOWNDRAFT WINDS ABOUT 25 FEET AGL DURING FINAL APPROACH FOR LANDING ON A TURF AIRSTRIP. THE AIRCRAFT DESCENDED ABRUPTLY, LANDED HARD AND NOSED OVER. THE PILOT WAS AWARE OF DOWNDRAFTS ON THE APPROACH.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920430013119A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920430013119A), Apr 30, 1992: Cessna 182B, Chamberlain Gua, ID, Substantial damage. Encountered sudden downdraft on short final. Power added but no recovery. Impacted hard and nosed over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
