## Probable cause

SHORTING OF THE GROUNDING WIRE (P LEAD) TO THE MAGNETOS FOLLOWED BY OVERLOADING OF THE NOSE WHEEL STRUT. A FACTOR CONTRIBUTING TO THE ACCIDENT WAS: ROUGH/UNEVEN TERRAIN.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power, approach - vfr pattern - base leg/base to final
  - ignition system,magneto grounding lead (p-lead) - shorted (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Nose gear collapsed, landing - roll
  - landing gear, nose gear strut - overload (cause)
  - terrain condition - rough/uneven (contributing factor)

## Analysis

WHILE TURNING BASE TO RUNWAY 19 AT THE PANGUITCH MUNICIPAL AIRPORT THE PILOT EXPERIENCED A COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER. UNABLE TO MAKE THE RUNWAY HE EXECUTED A FORCED LANDING ON ROUGH TERRAIN SHORT OF THE THRESHOLD. DURING THE LANDING ROLL THE NOSE WHEEL STRUT SUSTAINED OVERLOAD FORCES AND SEPARATED FROM THE AIRCRAFT. POST CRASH EXAMINATION AND TESTING OF THE IGNITION SYSTEM REVEALED THAT THE GROUNDING WIRES (P LEADS), WHERE THEY ENTER THE MAGNETO HOUSING, HAD SHORTED AGAINST THE RETAINING NUT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920606018419A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920606018419A), Jun 6, 1992: Beech V35B, Panguitch, UT, Substantial damage. Lost power on base leg while landing. Nose gear failed landing short. Found. Bare ignition harness grounded system.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
