## Probable cause

FUEL EXHAUSTION DUE TO INADEQUATE FUEL SUPPLY. FACTORS INCLUDE A DITCH ENCOUNTERED WHILE LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, maneuvering
  - fluid,fuel - exhaustion (cause)
  - preflight planning/preparation - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing
  - terrain condition - ditch (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE CESSNA 152 HAD FLOWN FOR ABOUT FOURS HOURS SINCE ITS LAST REFUELING WHEN IT SUSTAINED A LOSS OF POWER AND THE STUDENT PILOT ATTEMPTED A FORCED LANDING. THE AIRCRAFT WAS DAMAGED DURING THE FORCED LANDING, AND THE FUEL LINE TO THE CARBURETOR WAS SEPARATED. THE STUDENT PILOT STATED THAT THE FUEL GAUGES HAD INDICATED ABOUT 1/4 TANKS BEFORE THE LOSS OF POWER. NO MECHANICAL DISCREPANCIES TO THE ENGINE WERE NOTED BY FAA INSPECTORS.
