## Probable cause

THE ENGINE SEIZED AND THE AIRPLANE ENCOUNTERED UNSUITABLE TERRAIN DURING THE FORCED LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - mech failure/malf, cruise - normal
  - powerplant - seized (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - soft (cause)
- Nose over, landing - roll

## Analysis

DURING A CROSS COUNTRY FLIGHT, THE ENGINE LOST PARTIAL POWER. THE PILOT ADJUSTED THE THROTTLE AND FULL POWER WAS RESTORED. APPROXIMATELY ONE MINUTE LATER, THE ENGINE STARTED TO GRADUALLY LOSE ALL POWER. THE PILOT INITIATED A FORCED LANDING TO AN OPEN FIELD. DURING THE LANDING ROLL, ON THE SOFT SOIL, THE AIRPLANE NOSED OVER. THE PILOT REPORTED THAT DURING THE ENGINE INSPECTION, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE AFT CYLINDER PISTON DISPLAYED MODERATE TO SEVERE HEAT DISTRESS.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920913036409A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920913036409A), Sep 13, 1992: Amtrdf KITFOX, Baker, OR, Substantial damage. Lost power. Nosed over landing in a field. Aft cylinder showed heat distress.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
