## Probable cause

THE PILOT IN COMMAND'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL. A FACTOR CONTRIBUTING TO THE ACCIDENT WAS WIND GUSTS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - weather condition - crosswind
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - weather condition - gusts (contributing factor)
- Nose over, landing - roll

## Analysis

THE PILOT EXECUTED A LANDING TO THE SOUTH ON A GRAVEL ROAD AND REPORTED THAT DURING THE ROLLOUT 'A WEST CROSS WIND GUSTED & PUSHED THE AIRCRAFT TO THE LEFT'. THE PILOT LOST DIRECTIONAL CONTROL AND THE AIRCRAFT NOSED OVER AS IT DEPARTED THE ROAD. THE PILOT REPORTED WESTERLY WINDS AT 10 KNOTS WITH GUSTS TO 30 KNOTS.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920919038289A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920919038289A), Sep 19, 1992: Cessna 172M, Lloyd, MT, Substantial damage. Crosswind gust blew aircraft off side of road on attempted landing wing hit tree. Nosed over in ditch. 30 knot wind

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
