## Probable cause

FAILURE TO MAINTAIN AIRSPEED. FACTORS INCLUDE AN IMPROPER FUEL SELECTOR SETTING, AND FUEL STARVATION.

## Analysis

THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT IN THE MORRISEY 2150A HAD JUST FINISHED DEMONSTRATING A TOUCH AND GO LANDING WHEN THE ENGINE LOST POWER. DURING THE ATTEMPTED FORCED LANDING THE AIRSPEED WAS ALLOWED TO GET LOW, AND THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE TERRAIN. IT WAS LATER DISCOVERED THAT THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT HAD FAILED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE STUDENT PILOT HAD REPOSITIONED THE FUEL SELECTORS TO INSURE THE ENGINE WAS BEING FED FROM THE PROPER TANK.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power, takeoff - initial climb
  - fuel tank selector position - improper, pilot in command(cfi) (contributing factor)
  - fluid,fuel - starvation (contributing factor)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with terrain/water, landing
  - airspeed - not maintained, pilot in command(cfi) (cause)

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19921023023179A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19921023023179A), Oct 23, 1992: Varga 2150AMORISY, Dallas, OR, Substantial damage. Reported power loss on climbout. Stalled into open field. Fuel selector on empty tank. Difficult to see by CFI.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
