## Probable cause

POOR IN-FLIGHT PLANNING/PREPARATION. A FACTOR TO THE ACCIDENT WAS: IMPROPER USE OF THE MIXTURE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power, approach - vfr pattern - base turn
  - mixture - improper use of, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - in-flight planning/decision - poor, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- On ground/water collision with object, landing - roll
  - object - fence

## Analysis

AT THE END OF THE FLIGHT, THE PILOT REPORTED THAT HE ENTERED THE PATTERN FOR THE RUNWAY. CARB HEAT WAS APPLIED WHILE ON DOWNWIND. AS THE AIRPLANE WAS TURNING TO THE BASE LEG, THE ENGINE QUIT. THE PILOT WAS UNABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE AND THE AIRPLANE TOUCHED DOWN APPRX 50 FEET SHORT OF THE RUNWAY. DURING THE LANDING ROLL, THE AIRPLANE COLLIDED WITH A FENCE. AFTER THE ACCIDENT, THE PILOT STATED TO AN INDIVIDUAL AT THE AIRPORT, THAT HE HAD LEANED THE MIXTURE FOR A HIGH ALTITUDE AIRPORT. POST-CRASH INSPECTION REVEALED THAT WHEN STARTED, THE ENGINE RAN NORMAL AT IDLE POWER FOR A SHORT PERIOD, THEN WAS SHUT DOWN DUE TO A BENT PROPELLER BLADE. THERE WERE NO NOTED MECHANICAL FAILURES OR MALFUNCTIONS.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19921024043219A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19921024043219A), Oct 24, 1992: Cessna 150L, Enterprise, OR, Substantial damage. Engine quit turning on base for landing. Impacted short of runway. Found mixture leaned. Failed enrich for landing.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
