## Probable cause

THE PILOT IN COMMAND'S MISJUDGED DESCENT. FACTORS INCLUDE THE PILOT IN COMMAND'S LACK OF EXPERIENCE IN THIS TYPE OF OPERATION.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight collision with terrain/water, landing
  - descent - misjudged, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of total experience in type operation, pilot in command (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT WAS LEARNING THE TECHNIQUES SPECIFIC TO CHRISTMAS TREE OPERATIONS. ABOARD THE AIRCRAFT WITH HIM WAS AN EXPERIENCED PILOT WHO WAS COACHING HIM ON THE TECHNIQUES. WHILE CARRYING A LOAD OF SIX OR SEVEN SMALL LOGS, THE HELICOPTER MADE A HARD LANDING AND THE ROTOR BLADES STRUCK THE TAIL BOOM DURING ONE APPROACH TO A 55 GALLON DRUM BEING USED AS A TARGET. A WITNESS STATED THAT THE HELICOPTER APPEARED TO SETTLE WITH POWER.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
