## Probable cause

THE IMPROPER PREFLIGHT PLANNING BY THE PILOT AND HIS FAILURE TO ATTAIN PROPER AIRSPEED FOR TAKEOFF FROM A SHORT STRIP IN TAILWIND WEATHER CONDITIONS. A FACTOR RELATING TO THE ACCIDENT WAS THE TAILWIND WEATHER CONDITIONS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, takeoff - initial climb
  - weather condition - tailwind (contributing factor)
  - preflight planning/preparation - improper, pilot in command (cause)
  - airspeed(vlof) - not attained, pilot in command (cause)
  - lift-off - premature, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled

## Analysis

THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO TAKE OFF FROM A 1100 FT. DIRT STRIP IN TAILWIND WEATHER CONDITIONS. THE ACFT ENTERED A DESCENT AT FULL POWER AFTER LIFTOFF, STRUCK A TREE, AND IMPACTED THE GROUND OFF THE END OF THE STRIP.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19930127001239A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930127001239A), Jan 27, 1993: Cessna 180E, Riggins, ID, Substantial damage. Aircraft impacted trees on initial climb. Impacted on highway. Strong tailwind breeze.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
